Anchors Aweigh (+sick)
So, if y’all have been waiting on me to answer an email, to write an email, to respond to your tweet, to really do anything that involves me sitting in front of a computer for more than ten minutes at a time, you may have been disappointed in the last week. And seriously, I’m so, so sorry about that! I feel incredibly guilty about it.
But, here’s the thing:
I’ve joined the United States’ Navy.
- Right now I’m going to be an “AC”: Air Traffic Controller.
- I’ve enlisted for five years.
- And, unless my rate (job) changes, I’ll ship out in April.
(Yes, this may affect Crits for Water 2013. It’ll still happen! Just possibly earlier or later.)
Turns out enlisting is not something you can get through quickly, and compounding that, all the “Hurry Up and Wait” they have you do is surprisingly exhausting, even though it was fun to banter with the other recruits and meet all the great people serving the US.
But! I’ll start basic training in early April, and then training to be an Air Traffic Controller sometime in June 2013, though I’m hoping to change my rate (job) to a Cryptologic Technician Interpretive–essentially a translator. If that doesn’t happen, though, I’ll be sent all around the world to help planes land safely and efficiently.
I’m quite excited to serve my country and have a job that’ll allow me to advance and be challenged. Huzzah! If y’all have any questions about the process, go ahead and throw them in the comments. I’d be willing to turn this into a series to help other folks who are interested in enlisting or getting commissioned as an Officer.

The other thing is…Holy Gad Zooks, my sister and nephew are crazy sick. Not exactly sure with what, only that they’ve got fevers and blisters and vomiting and blech. So, to help them get over it quick, I’ve spent my time since enlisting by cleaning, cooking, and washing my hands like a mofo.
So, while I’m going to do my best to catch up with all the emails, critiques, messages, and lurve, I really appreciate your patience. My response time just got twice as slow as usual.
Thanks for your understanding! And again, if you have any questions, throw them up here. I’ll answer as soon as I can.

Um…how did I MISS THIS GIANT LIFE CHANGING EVENT? Wow, Kat! This is AWESOME. Go. YOU. And good luck to your sister and nephew (even though it’s >1 month since you wrote this…so they are hopefully better by now).
WOWOWOWOW!!!

Kat congrats on joining the Navy and good luck! I hope you get to be a translator one day
I hope the nephew and sister feel better soon.
Thanks Marie! I hope you’re doing well, too.

Whaaa!! That’s awesome! Both my uncles and my grandpa were Navy men (one uncle served on a submarine, the other was on the deck of the USS Duluth at the fall of Saigon, pushing helicopters off the side). Sorry about the baby sick though. I bet nobody is getting any sleep. My little guy gave me a formula bath yesterday, right when I was ready to go to town, so that was fun. Hope you get caught up soon! And good luck with Basic Training!
Thanks for the well wishes! My sister pretty well sanitized the house, so now it’s just upkeep to make sure it stays that way!
And I know what you mean about spit-up! The nephew poo’d on me early last week!!!
Hey Kat- Good luck to you in the Navy! I served in the army over 20 years ago and had a great time. Here are my words of wisdom to you for this experience. (Especially the basic training part.) Never volunteer. ha ha ha. Have fun!
Haha, thanks for the advice. I’ll do what I can, I guess.
